Community Consultation

Consultation with the many schools and communities involved in the ARDAC study, as well as having access to the knowledge of Aboriginal communities, has been an essential part of the study’s success. The aim of community consultation has been to ensure that our Aboriginal communities are engaged in the study and able to have a say about their own health and research.

Community consultation has included:

  • Making contact with both the Aboriginal community and wider community
  • Liaising with participating schools and Aboriginal Education Officers
  • Liaising with Aboriginal Health Services and Aboriginal Health Workers
  • Making contact with the Aboriginal elders in each area

These methods have been successful in maintaining ongoing relationships with Aboriginal communities and raising awareness about kidney disease from an Aboriginal perspective. Ensuring that study participants receive adequate medical follow-up after screening is another important goal of community consultation.
